Tim has been playing trumpet since his boyhood days in Woodstock, Ontario.
His family traces it passion for music back over 100 years. His grandfather was a Salvation Army Bandmaster so it was quite natural that his father and uncles all played various instruments. Likewise, Tim and his two brothers played trumpet while his sister had to settle for clarinet and piano. Tim attributes his ability with the trumpet to his father's encouragement and to his trumpet teachers: Don Johnson, Jim Ford and Henry Meredith. The latter two taught him while he attended the University of Western Ontario from which he graduated with both a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education.
Tim taught high school music in Northern Ontario for seven years and is currently filling in full time for a teacher in Owen Sound. He is also an accomplished Piano Technician, having been accepted as a Craftsman Member of the Ontario Guild of Piano Technicians. His numerous musical experiences include playing in such bands as the Royal Regiment of Toronto and the Royal Canadian Regiment of Woodstock. He is a current member of the Georgian Bay Symphony and the Bruce Brass Quintet.
One of his favourite groups was a "pick-up" band in a mental hospital, which included his uncle on drums. NO- he worked there in the recreation department. Because the only person with music was the pianist, Tim credits this experience with his ability to play by ear.
Tim and his wife Diane live in Paisley where they designed and built a new house last summer with a little help from their friends. Three of their four children are quite musical. Joanna has played bass with the Georgian Bay Symphony and has just left with her bass for college in Toronto. Diane, who is an accomplished pianist, also plays regulary as a faux-hasrpist with the symphony. She currently directs music at Knox Presbyterian Church in Kincardine and met Tim, where else, but in a high school band.
Born in Scotland, Ian has been interested in brass playing since joining a junior Salvation
Army Band in Glasgow, playing most instruments though the next sixteen years.
National Service in the British Army allowed a short episode at Kneller Hall, prior to spending time in Korea and Africa.
At University he spent time exploring dance, music and jazz until graduation, when the trumpet was set aside due to work pressures. Settling in Ontario, Ian played with small combos and in club groups until 1980. With children in music programmers, he decided to go back to formal tuition and studied under John Ticker in Kitcheners-Waterloo. This led to joining the Georgian Bay Symphony in 1982 and the enjoyment of the challenge and fun of serious playing.
The best part of playing with the Symphony, as a Scot, I sitting in the middle of great music, at no cost, enjoying making music.
