Sterling grew up in Wiarton but attended the O.S.C.V.I. where he was introduced to the bassoon by James Cranney. Deciding he rather liked the instrument, he began studying bassoon with Cedric Coleman in 1982 and attended the University of Toronto, where he studied with Gabor Janota, David McGill, and Kathleen McLean. Upon completing his Bachelor of Music in Performance in 1989, he attended the University of Kansas and completed his Master of Music Therapy degree in 1994. He is currently maintaining a busy private Music Therapy practice, conducting the Wiarton and District Community Choir, playing drums in an entertainment band, and enjoying time with his young daughter, Emeline, and wife, Agnès.

He was fortunate to study with Kathleen Maclean, David McGill, and Gabor Janota while in Toronto and with Cedric Coleman, in Kitchener, before attending university. He is currently a music therapist serving the long-term care population in Grey and Bruce counties and a part-time stay-at-home Dad. In his spare time, he plays bassoon with the GBSO, kit drums with a local entertainment band, and teaches a course at Laurentian University in Sudbury.
