The Georgian Bay Symphony is excited to announce it will be hosting a free strings workshop for beginner to intermediate string players on May 14 and 21, from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm at East Ridge Community School Owen Sound, orchestra member Greg Galoska will be leading string players in the study of four different rounds. Register today to receive the sheet music so you can start to prepare to make music together as a group, learn to follow a conductor, and meet other fellow musicians in the area.
The event will be split into two evenings of music making. During session one we will start by warming up together and learning how to follow a conductor. Next we will discuss what a round is and have some fun hearing examples of rounds. Then, we will break into smaller groups that will be led by amazing musicians such as Paul Earl and Matthew Hayes, who will assist in learning the rounds that we will be playing. Finally, we will come together and make some beautiful music by layering and experimenting with the rounds we have learned.
The second session will build on the foundation that the first session established. After warming up we will introduce two new rounds in small groups. During this time we will discuss topics such as expressive techniques through lyrical bowing and rhythmic articulation. Afterwards we will gather as a group and put the rounds together, again working with a conductor to strengthen our group performance technique. Before ending the workshop, we will invite family and friends to attend a performance of the rounds we have worked on over the two sessions!
Expect to learn new songs and new techniques. Introduce yourself to the joy of making music with friends. Familiarize yourself with following a conductor. But above all, have fun!
The sessions are free however you do need to register, Register today by emailing gbs@bmts.com Subject: Spring Strings.
We are grateful for the support of the Walker Endowed Fund through the Community Foundation Grey Bruce.
